IPST Conference History and Steering Committee

Conference History

  • The International Conference on Power Systems Transients (IPST) offers a platform for the exchange of scientific and technical information related to electromagnetic transients in electric power systems. Contributors are sought on all topics related to the study of transient phenomena in electric energy systems. This includes, but is not limited to, computer simulations, transient network analyzer studies, and field measurements.

IPST was created with the goal of promoting the study of power systems transients by offering a platform of scientific and technical excellence for its presentation. As an open conference, it is intended to be a forum for the scientific community involved in all topics related to the study of transient phenomena in electric energy systems.

IPST is an outgrowth of the European Conference on Power Systems Transients. The first EPST conference, which was hosted by IST of the Technical University of Lisbon, and organized by Professor Maria Teresa Correia de Barros, was held in Lisbon, Portugal during the summer of 1993. That first conference included 39 contributions from 17 countries.

Based largely on the positive response to EPST ’93, the conference was then expanded to an international community, and an Steering Committee was formed. This committee maintains continuous responsibility for providing oversight of the process and ensuring coordination of the conference on a two year basis. The 12 person committee, which is Co-Chaired by Professors Maria Teresa Correia de Barros and Hermann Dommel, is responsible for analyzing proposals, selecting a site, and choosing chairmen for Local Organizing and Technical Committees for the next event. These chairmen then form committees and support staff for organizing and promoting their respective conference. It is anticipated that the conference will alternate between Europe and North America, however, a number of other equally attractive sites may also host IPST conferences in the future.

The first IPST Conference was held during September 1995 in Lisbon. The technical program included 94 contributions representing 27 countries.

    Previous IPST Conferences include:

    • IPST '95 was held in Lisbon on September 3-7, 1995, and was hosted by Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon.
    • IPST '97 was held in Seattle on June 22-26, 1997, and was hosted by the Engineering Professional Programs of the University of Washington.
    • IPST '99 was held in Budapest on June 20-24, 1999, and was hosted by the Technical University of Budapest.
    • IPST '01 was held in Rio de Janeiro on June 24-28, 2001, and was hosted by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
    • IPST '03 was held in New Orleans on September 28 - October 2, 2003, and was hosted by Entergy Corporation.
    • IPST '05 was held in Montréal on June 19-23, 2005, and was hosted by Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie.
    • IPST '07 was held in Lyon on June 4-7, 2007, and was hosted by Ecole Centrale de Lyon.
